The Man You’re Becoming
“Your wardrobe should keep up with your ambition.”
Words by Goldie De-Iyamu
There comes a point in every man’s life when he realises he has outgrown certain things.
The clothes he used to wear.
The places he used to go.
The conversations he used to have.
Even the way he sees himself.
It rarely happens all at once.
There is no announcement. No morning when you wake up and suddenly become a completely different person.
It happens quietly.
You take on more responsibility. Your ambitions become clearer. Your standards change. You start imagining a different kind of life.
And eventually, you look at your wardrobe and realise it hasn’t caught up yet.

Dress for Where You’re Going
We are often told to dress for the occasion.
Dress for the job interview.
Dress for the wedding.
Dress for the meeting.
But there is another way to think about getting dressed:
Dress for the life you’re building.
Not in a performative way.
I’m not suggesting you wear a suit to buy groceries because you want to look successful.
It is much simpler than that.
If you’re becoming someone who travels more, build a wardrobe that travels well.
If you’re spending more time in rooms where presentation matters, invest in pieces that make you feel prepared.
If you’re becoming more intentional about your life, perhaps your wardrobe should reflect that intention too.
Your clothes should make the life you’re living easier—and the life you’re moving towards feel a little more familiar.
The Way You Dress Changes With You
Think about the clothes you wore at twenty.
They probably made sense then.
Maybe you wanted to stand out.
Maybe you followed every trend.
Maybe you simply wore whatever your friends were wearing.
There is nothing wrong with that.
But growing up often means becoming more comfortable with knowing what works for you.
You begin to understand your proportions.
Your colours.
Your fabrics.
Your lifestyle.
You stop buying things because everyone else has them and start asking a better question:
Does this belong in my life?
That is when personal style starts to become interesting.
Because style isn’t really about clothes.
It is about knowing yourself.

Confidence Has a Uniform
There are certain outfits that change the way you walk into a room.
Not because the clothes are magical.
Because you feel prepared.
A well-fitted shirt.
Trousers that sit properly.
Shoes that make you feel polished.
A watch you have worn enough times that it feels like part of you.
A fragrance that becomes associated with your presence.
These details create a kind of familiarity with yourself.
You stop thinking about what you’re wearing.
You start thinking about what you’re there to do.
And that is one of the most useful things a good wardrobe can give you:
less distraction, more presence.
Don’t Dress to Impress Everyone
One of the biggest mistakes men make with style is trying to impress people they don’t even know.
The internet makes this particularly easy.
You see the watch someone bought.
The car someone drives.
The holiday someone took.
The clothes someone wears.
And suddenly your own life feels like it needs an upgrade.
But style built around comparison will never feel complete.
There will always be someone with more.
More expensive clothes.
More followers.
More money.
More access.
Personal style becomes much more powerful when you stop asking:
“Will people think I look good?”
and start asking:
“Do I feel like myself in this?”
That question changes everything.

The Wardrobe of the Man You’re Becoming
The man you’re becoming probably doesn’t need a wardrobe full of complicated outfits.
He needs reliable ones.
The shirt he knows works when the meeting matters.
The trousers that make every shirt look better.
The loafers that can carry him from afternoon to evening.
The T-shirt he reaches for without thinking.
The co-ord that makes a weekend away easier.
The fragrance people begin to associate with him.
The watch that quietly becomes part of his uniform.
These pieces aren’t about impressing people.
They’re about removing friction.
When you know what works, getting dressed becomes easier.
And when getting dressed becomes easier, you have more energy for everything else.
Become Before You Arrive
There is a strange pressure to wait.
We tell ourselves we’ll dress better when we get the promotion.
When we make more money.
When we lose the weight.
When we move into the better house.
When life finally looks the way we imagined it would.
But there is no reason to wait.
You can start becoming now.
You can take better care of yourself now.
You can improve your wardrobe now.
You can learn how to communicate better now.
You can surround yourself with better people now.
You can start carrying yourself like someone who takes his future seriously.
Not because you are pretending to have arrived.
But because you’re giving yourself permission to grow into the person you’re working towards.

The Standard You Set for Yourself
I’ve learnt that style is often less about having good taste and more about having standards.
You don’t need the most expensive wardrobe.
You don’t need a hundred pairs of shoes.
You don’t need to follow every trend.
You simply need to care.
Care about the fit.
Care about the details.
Care about how you present yourself.
Care about the things you allow into your life.
Because eventually, the standards you set in one part of your life begin to influence the others.
You become more intentional about your clothes.
Then your home.
Then your time.
Then your relationships.
Then your work.
It starts with something as simple as deciding that you want to show up differently.
So, Who Are You Becoming?
Maybe you’re becoming more ambitious.
Maybe you’re becoming a better partner.
A better father.
A better friend.
A better leader.
Maybe you’re simply becoming more comfortable with yourself.
Whatever it is, let your life evolve.
Let your wardrobe evolve with it.
Buy the shirt for the meeting you’ve been working towards.
Wear the trousers you’ve been saving for a special occasion.
Take yourself seriously enough to look after the details.
Not for Instagram.
Not for strangers.
Not for approval.
For you.
Because the goal was never to look like someone else.
It was to become more fully yourself.
And sometimes, the first sign that you’re changing is surprisingly simple:
You start dressing like you believe your future is worth preparing for.
